Getting Started

Finally. I have actually created my new site: FoodBurgh. For at least a year now, I have wanted to establish a new space in the blogosphere to document my explorations into the culinary universe. Earlier tonight, I participated in Blogfest 17 in hopes of finding that extra push that I’ve been looking for. Well, that seems to have done it. After laying down $8 for a new domain (different than any of my previously considered domains) and installing the latest version of WordPress, I’m writing. It’s not really so difficult—once you take the first step. ;-)
Now I’m going to take a minute here to tell everyone what I hope to accomplish in this space.
I called this site FoodBurgh because I truly hope I can use it to showcase my exploration of Pittsburgh’s food universe. Pittsburgh is home to an enormous number of locally owned and operated restaurants and regions chains. Some of them are amazing; others are so-so, and others still are downright worthless. My hope is that each week I can post my thoughts on one of them.
I also expect to post comments related to my own experiences in the kitchen. I’ve been interested in cooking for as far back as I can remember. I’ve been half-way decent in the kitchen for, well, less than as far back as I can remember. More recently, I’ve been fascinated by techniques. It’s one thing to throw together a few random flavors and call it a meal; it’s quite another to understand a fundamental culinary technique. Think of the difference between making a salad and baking a loaf of bread. You can follow a bread recipe to the gram and still end up with something less than a loaf of bread. There’s a certain skill in understanding the technique and adapting based on the feel of the kitchen rather than holding fiercely to recipe that’s just not working out. I’ll be sure to post comments on my exploration of these techniques as I try new things and gain more experience.
Those two categories are my hope for this space in a nutshell. I’m sure this will evolve over time based on your feedback, so post a comment and join the conversation. Let me know how I’m doing and what you think I should change.

Why thank you! I’ll keep trying to say something interesting about the Pittsburgh food scene and hope enough people find my content interesting.
