In response to Mike:
"the food reminded me of visiting my (hereditarily German) grandmother."
Well, Mike, this IS a traditional German restaurant!

"The apple raises the question of why the beet red garnish wasn’t actually a beet?"
You have obviously never heard of a cinnamon apple, a once-common garnish.
And if I had been your waitress, I also would have been a tad upset with a sudden influx of a large crowd of perhaps slightly inebriated people with no reservation.

Remember, there are lots of people, myself included, who miss old-fashioned food and dislike the often confusing tastes of "fusion" food! But I do hope you give this place more than one try.

As someone who was also eating there that day and is less of a health-tard and less of an emphasis on visual presentation I have to say I really liked Max's and the food that I got and what I tried of others' dishes was really good!

I also got the goulash, which was really delicious. The spatzel was good as was the German potato... not sure what it was, casserole or salad. It was tangy and unique. The side which I got, the corn casserole, was also delightful. It wasn't what i was expecting when I heard 'corn casserole', I was imagining a creamy baked corn item, it was basically a corn bread with whole corn kernels and a little bit of a kick.

Although I didn't try everything that everyone else at my table got (the goulash was engrossing) it all looked really good! And yes, it is definitely on the local, home-cookin' style side but if you are looking for (German) comfort food, this is a great place!

It was true that the waitstaff there wasn't the 'friendliest' but it didn't bother me so much as I chalked it up to the sort of sassy, no-frills, no-nonsense nature of the place, which I did enjoy. So I wouldn't call the ambiance of the place bad, it just depends on what you're looking for.

I give Max's a thumbs up and I'd like to go back again and try some of their other dishes!
