I had a very odd mix of experiences there too. The first time I ate there I had what was arguably the best risotto I've ever had. And the entire meal in fact was just lovely. The second time, close to a year later both I and my dining companion (a chef btw) had the worst meal we've ever had, start to finish. Truly dreadful. And when I emailed them about it, they were rude and dismissive and wanted to hear or accept nothing I had to say. I honestly wasn't sure if the owners had gotten a new chef, or if they knew about the deterioration in quality, and was just trying to let them know how disastrous the meal was. Needless to say, on principle, I'll never go back and your review kind of reinforces that.

We too were disappointed when we visit within the first few months after they opened. Your review sounds much like our experience. It's an odd atmosphere somewhere between a social club and fine dining. The menu definitely favors the carnivore. Salad and veggies were fair, at best, and the meat okay but not stellar. I think that their prices are way too high for the offerings and quality. Like you, we too (4 of us) had mixed feelings and have yet to return. Overall, FAIL.

You guys are both very right. I tend to feel the same way about my star rating leniency. I tend to believe that every restaurant is just perfect for someone, and try to separate the notion of "doesn't cater to my tastes" from "horrible restaurant." When scoring, I often like to think of a 3-star rating as hitting one side of that balance.

Jim's' comment actually got me thinking about how ratings are assigned in my beer judge studies: point allocations for each of 5-6 components of beer quality. Perhaps what i really need to do is chart out my own "restaurant score sheet" and use that to give some more meaning to my ratings.

...perhaps this whole discussion needs a whole post all it's own.

Nice job with the reviews Mike, they are all really well written. But i tend to agree with the post from Jim above. You seem to be a little to lenient with your star ratings. If a place doesnt stand up to your standards you should reflect it in your star ratings.

I enjoy reading your reviews because I feel you have similar tastes to me and many of my friends, but I think perhaps you need to review some places you don't like or get harsher with your star ratigs. Right now the scale seems to be 4 out of 5 for almost everything (thus making 4 average), 3.5 is downright terrible, and 4.5 is amazing. :)
