That photo of the Franklin Inn sign with the snow in the background is so surreal... that alone makes me want to try this place :)

Thanks for the recommendations, CV!

I actually really want to try Mexico City (and, now that you've pointed it out, Madonna's as well). Sadly, it's a little difficult for me to hit up downtown during the day. Places that are only open for lunch make that a little hard.

Regarding downtown Mexican restaurants, Mexico City is indeed a find (there are two...the original is on Smithfield St. and a slightly larger place opened within the past couple of years on Wood St.).

But there's another good option nearby for Mexican...Madonna's on Fourth Ave. It is a tiny place in the Times building....only open for lunch and closes around 3 pm. They make great in house salsa and guacamole (I think the chips are made in house as well). They have a barbeque sauce called "tinga" that is very good. The owner is very friendly and eager to please. There are a few booths and a bar for eating along the window.

While I am plugging downtown eats, I might as well mention Verde Good Beans on First Ave. near Smithfield behind the Art Institute. It is run by a mother and daughter team. They have great coffee and milk steamers and a variety of options for lunch. Everything is locally sourced. The soup is always sold out by the time I get there. Lots of veggie options. Recommended.

Whoa. It looks like I definitely need to head back for a margarita. I'm typically more of a beer guy, but I would be up for giving a margarita a try. Better yet, I'll bring along some friends who appreciate a good margarita a littlebit more than me.

Speaking of friends, I actually have an "authentic" Mexican friend who would be interested in joining me, so I'll bring him along and hopefully report back.

The margaritas are very, very good. I have been there a few times with a friend from the North Hills. I found the food to be fairly good as well. I don't remember having anything there that wasn't tasty and the chips are great, like you pointed out.

I really want to try Las Velas in Market Square some time soon to see if the food there is tasty. You should put that on your list to try out. I am always trying to find good Mexican food. I love Mexico City downtown, as well.

The Franklin Inn is one of the best reasons to live in the Franklin Park neighborhood. The best time to get there on any evening is around 5....after that, you'll be waiting because this is the best-kept secret in our 'hood!! The food is great, the staff are incredibly friendly and attentive and the kitchen very accomodating! I liked your review....very fair! I don't like beer, so it's not a concern for me....I enjoy the margaritas or sangria when I don't have a friend to share a mason jar with!!

The Franklin Inn may be the only thing I miss about living in Ingomar/Wexford. The place is a complete North Hills institution -- really popular (and one of few non-chains out that way), but not something you'd ever hear about if you didn't live in that area. We used to go all the time. I'm glad to see it's about the same as always (since I haven't been in ages).

Definitely get a margarita next time -- they're quite good (at they least used to be) and very reasonable for the portion size IMHO. The black bean soup and app were also favorites of mine (even before I stopped eating meat).
